Golly where has the time gone, already coming in to September, mind you whose complaining with this great weather, already Christmas is being discussed on the Radio, scary, anyway, our season is not quite finished yet, in fact I was just thinking Roundstone still attracts all sorts of people, Nial McDonagh is here with his family you know, the actor from Big Brother, Paddy the yanks cousin, as well as Brian Cohen who was spotted today on Innishnee perhaps to meet up the the Senator for a game of golf, who knows.

Its certainly has been a week of activities and entertainment in Roundstone with the two day rowing regatta, traditional music, also last night in the community Hall a group of 70 American gospel singers from California who are staying in the village for two days, in fact its their third time to be in Roundstone, anyway the group sang in the Community Hall introduced by our Christina Lowry and joining her with our own traditional music with 8 young lads from Carna who are part of the Colltas under the eye of Marcus Hernon, they gave an incredible performance, I gather their opening piece that they played, was part of a competition of which they came second also some Sanós dancing, young Maeve O’Neil did the brush dance, who is only 11 years of age, the elegance and confidence of this young lady, was really something to behold, we also had our local ladies giving a demonstration of some reels and again our own Joe McDonagh who by the way has just reached his 80 birthday rendered a couple of Sanós songs.

At last we now have a nice clean pot hole free road from the church onwards, finished just in the nick of time before the Bank Holiday, therefore thank you Galway County Council. What is also very noticeable everybody has made a serious effort this year to keep their front doors in a good tidy order along the road side; our visitors can not help but be impressed.

Not a bad week weather wise and visitors wise, its certainly building into a potentially year, I mean this weekend was busy, also helped my the Roundstone Market, talking about the market which has been held in the Community Hall car park, it is hoped that next Sunday the stalls will be up on the Tennis courts which makes much more sense, parking space in the village is fairly limited, therefore this will release the Car Park, I have to say some really wonderful Stalls.

There are a lot of good things happening in Roundstone, what with the work carried out by the FAS lads in preparation for the tidy towns, the country market, the opening in early June of a fish shop, and a new facial and massage parlour and now Paddy the Yank is back, thank goodness, he will be getting geared up with preparations for the forth coming Roundstone pony and dog shows etc for the year 2010. Last week I have to say was a little awaked to the extent of the no news last Monday as Ann and I were away, I think we need to try and find a third person in case this happens again, so is there any body out there who would like to help with the news broadcast from Roundstone, there was also the cancelation of last Fridays Bingo Club, but this was due as a mark of respect for the passing of Annie King. We will continue this Friday coming with the Roundstone bingo club at 8.30 pm. So apologise to all, for the inconvenience, and so my thanks to Connemara community radio to put out this notice of cancelation at such short notice.

Mistle Thrushes:
A rather lovely story, Allan, Keane Conneely and Eamon Mongan were monitoring a thrush’s nest over the last few weeks, to there sadness they saw a cat kill the mother bird, leaving three half feathered fledglings, Martina brought them up to me with the kids with the nest, as I had a infer red lamp we duly started to warm them up and feed them, running around for worms, and soaked small bits of bread, and showed them how to feed these tiny birds, having warned the kids they might not survive the night, and not to over feed them, however the birds did survive the night. The next day after school the kids were up here like a shot and so glad to see them still alive, they decided to take my infer red light and take them home to look after them, that was a week ago, sadly for the kids the birds died just yesterday much to their sadness, but what a great effort. It’s so good to see young people with a very genuine care for the wild life, considering the mass destruction around them of the fauna and wild life of these horrendous gorse fires.

We have all been following the fall out of the Iceland Volcano and the disruption and chaos it has caused
In Roundstone alone four people I know off has had to postpone their trip to the states. I myself was due to go to Nice on Wednesday and still don’t know if this is possible or not. A friend of mine is stuck in Romania he was on a business trip and cannot get out. It goes on and on I suppose all of us know somebody or other that has been affected. But at least everyone is safe and well at any rate.

Ann mentioned last week that it was Nice to see the first 2010 car in Roundstone owned by two local owners. So as she said let’s hope that the RSA gets around to filling in all the pot holes that have sprung up since the frosty weather and making driving safe for them in fact for all of us. At the moment I dread a trip anywhere in Connemara with the state of the roads.

One might say that it has been a tough few weeks re the water problems, lack of pressure, burst pipes etc, but now it seems we are slowly getting back to normal, but as the icy weather is an act of god, the area has gone through a learning curve in so many ways perhaps the powers that be will be better prepared, if god forbid these acts of god, should happen again

What an adventurous week it has been in Roundstone through the Christmas and into the New Year, what with no water for a time, power and very high winds last Wednesday evening causing a bit of damage around the surrounding area of Roundstone, slates, a boat sank fortunately, all is well with the said boat. On a slightly humorous side, a lit up Santee climbing up the wall of the Shamrock, santee lost his head, however the head was found two days later, the head is now inside behind the bar, all we have to do now is to find his left foot. He is still on the wall headless ha ha ha
