Roundstone News 10th May 2010 |
|
Tuesday, 11 May 2010 08:50 |
There are a lot of good things happening in Roundstone, what with the work carried out by the FAS lads in preparation for the tidy towns, the country market, the opening in early June of a fish shop, and a new facial and massage parlour and now Paddy the Yank is back, thank goodness, he will be getting geared up with preparations for the forth coming Roundstone pony and dog shows etc for the year 2010. Last week I have to say was a little awaked to the extent of the no news last Monday as Ann and I were away, I think we need to try and find a third person in case this happens again, so is there any body out there who would like to help with the news broadcast from Roundstone, there was also the cancelation of last Fridays Bingo Club, but this was due as a mark of respect for the passing of Annie King. We will continue this Friday coming with the Roundstone bingo club at 8.30 pm. So apologise to all, for the inconvenience, and so my thanks to Connemara community radio to put out this notice of cancelation at such short notice.
Annie King:
Of course our condolences to Michael, Stephen, Francis, Martin and Bernard King on the loss of their mother Annie King wife of the late Brian King who was buried in Gurteen on Saturday, but on a personal note Annie was always very nice and quite spoken. May Annie rest in Peace
PJ McDonagh & Sandre.
Our Congratulations to PJ McDonagh and Sandra on their eldest son Stephan who made his first holy communion in Galway a few days ago
Mink:
The next item relates to the mink problem, quite a few people have informed me that they have not trapped any in the last month, and are under the impression that we have got rid of them, what I am trying to say is keep setting those traps, the females are rearing their young this month, and as they grow at a fast rate they will soon be walking around the country side with their mother.
Market in Roundstone
The first country market day which was held on the 2nd May in the Car park in Roundstone, with ten stalls, was I gather quite a success. The second Market day In Roundstone will be held on the 16th May commencing at 11am to 4pm down in the car park. Then come the summer the market will be held once a week. Should anybody want to have a table or more details re this country Market just Ring John Walsh on 095 41243, good one John, Roundstone as a venue is certainly helpful to keep our village alive.
Monty Halls Great Escape:
The meeting in the hall relating to the BBC2 production of Monty Halls great escape in the Community Hall in Roundstone which was held last Tuesday, I gather went really well, with a great turn out and interest from the locals. Apparently Monty and Martin both gave an enlightening presentation of previous works that had been carried out in the past, i.e. Monty with his deep sea diving exploits and Martin with his Mount Everest documentary. To date they have been out with Martin O’ Malley to Slyne Head and saw a whole colony of seals and some dolphins popping up on the way home. Now that Monty is "working" hand in hand for the IWDG (Irish Whale and Dolphin Group). His job is to monitor the Connemara area for them and look out for any sightings or strandings, reporting back with photos, swabs or samples that he may have obtained. He has already taken some good pictures of these dolphins and sent them to Simon Berrows, who is head of the IWDG and they identified them to be the same dolphins that were sighted in Donegal area in 2008!
With exciting events happening already, as he has only been here for two weeks in Connemara, of course thanks for the local help, it’s all looking good. Yours truly will accompany Monty, Martin and camera for a hike up Errisbeg Mountain, I hope he will bring his star on four legs and perhaps he might allow me to bring my potential star on four legs Jake the Labrador, they have already met, so I feel sure there will I hope not have an international incident, mind you Jake knows the hill better than me, no fear of getting lost with him around. By the way Monty and Martin are requesting, that if anyone spots dolphins/seals/whales or basking sharks, or in fact anything that could be of interest to do with wild life, please pick up the phone and call them, not sure what his number is but you can always call Lorna Hill on 0860750439. Also, If anyone knows of any stranding’s in the area, these would love to know of these area’s as Monty would to take samples/swabs and bring them back for research with the IWDG in Kilrush.
Roundstone Lotto:
The local Lotto now stands at €10.000 which is the biggest since the lotto began, therefore next Sunday 16th May there will some extra prizes, the draw will take place in the Shamrock Bar.
Well that’s all from me for this week. Ann will be on air with the news next Monday, hopefully with an early July weekend programme for the Arts week, so please tune in. Thanks for listening, keep smiling.
