Roundstone News 11th November 2010
Wednesday, 10 November 2010 10:32

Well, thank goodness, last nights storm was not so bad as was feared, apart from the rain, however Michael Reynolds, Pious and Paul Delapp got well prepared with sand bags placed along the old quay in case of flooding, with the filling of the gap in the wall opposite Martina Conneelly’s house, which is always a bad spot and liable to flood on to the Road and sometimes into her House.

As I have really very little news I would like to mention the next item which dose not necessarily have a lot to do with Roundstone however the people involved in this tale are indirectly connected to Roundstone with a novel way to raise a few bob for charity

Crow Patrick:

A rather unusual fund raising event took place yesterday in aid of Cancer Care West with a target of raising € 5’000 carrying a Honda 90 Bike to the top of Crow Patrick and down again this was done with a group of 12 lads, Sean Nee, Seamus Nee, Stephan Mullen, David Mullen, Pat O’Neil, Colin Connolly, Pat Dowd, Kevin Conneelly, from Ballyconneelly, Vincent Leggett from Kingstown, and Darragh Wallace from Clifden with two lads from Clare Michael Meagan and T.J. Moynihan. This effort was the Brain Child of Sean Nee, I have to say it took quite some organising, various permissions had to sought, i.e. the Archbishop for his permission to do this on a holy mountain and of course from the health and Safety angle, the Mayo Mountain Rescue had to be alerted for this event, luckily all went well without any mishaps.

They all left at 5.30 in the morning I am told that there was a slight look of horror of the task before them when they started the accent at 7.15am, there were five others who wanted just to walk with them each paying a few bob as part of the fund raiser, Bernadette O’Malley, Catherine McEvoy, Agnes Nee, Brendan Keogh, and from Clifden, Imelda Wallace, Patrick “Boots” Conneelly and Pat O’Neil’s sister Anne, who by the way ran all the way up and down again, then promptly cycled all the way back to Bally Conneelly, golly that took some doing .

However the lads did it in three hours and if you think about it the average walker takes three and half hours, anyway taking it in turns to carry the bike, each team which consisted of 4 to the bike, a terrific effort, I cant imagine what it must have been like when they got to the last leg, it is so steep!!, what was interesting other outsider walkers on the day were making donations to them, particulaly when they got to the top. Donations are still on going, so there is a great chance the group will reach their target, in fact next Saturday in Keoghs Ballyconneelly, a representative from Cancer Care West will be presented with a cheque from their incredible efforts, if not a little unusual. Well done to you guy’s a terrific effort, and on your behalf to thank the various powers that be for their help to ensure their safety and the two drivers for the group at 5.30 in the morning, Tom Mullen, and Joe Thornton, let’s not forget Patrick Thornton who transported the star of the event, so to speak, the proverbial Honda bike.

Birthday Wishes:

Belated birthday wishes to Rosie Mannion from Murvey and to Agnes de Courcey, whom had celebrated the coming of age so to speak.

St Cailin:

The 13th November is the annual pilgrimage to the Holy well, Ballyconneelly, to celebrate St Cailin who is the patron saint for the fisherman, and to remind you that on the 14th November we will have the Annual mass up on Gurteen grave yard at 2.30 pm with Father Jarleth
