Wow, what incredible warm weather, I feel slightly sorry for our visitors who were here in the very wet August, oh well that’s the way it goes, however it’s been very helpful to the success of various events in Roundstone held this week
Noyelles Sous Lens:
Last Week end Geraldine Coyne, and myself (Roundstone youth leaders) David McDonagh,(Youth Reprehensive) Michael & Carol Reynolds (Representing the Roundstone Community Council) were invited to celebrate the 6th year of the Twinning of the Roundstone Village, with the opening of the Roundstone Park, which was opened with all the dignitaries from Poland, Belgium and of course with the Mayor of Noyelles Sous Lens Alain Roger, with all his council members, at the same time Michael Reynolds gave a speech on behalf of Roundstone. During that weekend memorial flowers were laid in various parts of Noyelles as a mark of respect for all the lost polish solders in the first and second world wars, Noyelles was a coal mining town with polish workers, and today there are direct descendants of the polish miners, there was also a celebration of the polish liberation in 1945. It was a very formal and emotional weekend in so many ways, but the Roundstone members were very pleased to have taken part as the Irish delegation.
Tidy Towns Results:
Roundstone came third in our category, as was said last week we were up a few more points for the year 2009, the adjudicators did spell out in the various sections of the competition the good points and the bad points, and these we are going to seriously look at for the year 2010. Looking at Emily in county Tipperary, the winner of a small town, I am not surprised, its amazing what a difference a few good flowers around the village makes we have not got nearly enough for starters, but having said that, a few people within the community were recognized for their efforts, we still have a great deal more to go within the village for the year 2010 anyway you can read the details and the comments on the Roundstone Website, also on the Notice board in the village.
Champion of Champions Pony show:
Yesterday we had an incredible turn out for the Champion of Champions, helped along with a very warm sunny day, truly this is one of the shows within the last few years will always stay in my mind, I have to take my hat off to Paddy, his people skills are excellent, he had invited Enda Kenny leader of the FG party to open the show with the National Anthem sung by Eva Coneys, Eva hails from Streamstown sang right in the Middle of the Show ring, a very moving moment, Enda was very relaxed on his walk about shaking hands with people, and possible kissing the odd few babies, but leaving aside politics he is a very nice man, and easy to talk to he in fact spent most of the afternoon amongst the crowds. The timing was crucial to have Enda Kenny to appear to present the all Ireland Junior Championship prize, the timing was absolutely spot on, do I dare say it that most politicians are never on time, but in this case Enda in fact was on time and presented the junior Champion prize to Kieran Mc Grath with Glencarrig Romeo, and then Enda presented the reserve Champion Prize to our Roundstone man Cailin Conneely with Letterdypfe Rachel Rose, talking about Cailin, he has had an extraordinary year with 14 1st prizes and 5 Junior championships, 3 Reserve Supreme Championships, and after 50 years of ponies with his father, it was the first time he has won in Clifden this year, he got the Junior Champion, and Reserve Confined Champion, so it just shows you a little perseverance one will get there in the end. Cailin works at his ponies, all I would like to think his work is paying off, so congratulations Cailin, well deserved yesterday and good presentation for the Judges, who by the way were Jane Darragh from Stradbally and from Sussex Mark Western.
The All Ireland Champion Foal was won by Mary and Pat Rabbit from Westmeath with Monaghanstown Shannon and the Reserve Champion was Peter O’Malley from Galway with Caoranbeg Champ. Then the All Ireland Supreme Champion of the show was Kieran McGrath with Glencarrig Romeo, then reserve All Ireland supreme Champion was won by Peter Malloy with Dooneen Alice. The parade through the village was spectacular, with Ado on the mike and this was recorded by the Connemara community Radio, a perfect ending. The full result of the day will be on the pony show website as well as the Roundstone website tomorrow. I am sure that Paddy the Yank would like me to thank all the local volunteers on his behalf who helped out on the day with out them it would not have worked, of course our thanks to the pony owners without them there would be no show, and of course all the people that came through the gate. Well done everybody with your extraordinary good work.
