Tidy Towns Results:
Well, we now have the Roundstone 2010 Tidy Town results, a little disappointing in some ways; we only came up three more points this year. For example in the overall Development approach, 0ne point, the built environment, one point, and surprisingly in the Landscaping section we were only given one point, litter control the adjudicator took away a point and there was another point for the residential area’s, therefore we earned 245 points out of 400, oh well at least we are still climbing.
The Adjudication report will be give to all house holds within our area to read, but we must work on the sore spots so to speak and look into, and to improve the comments made by the Adjudicator before next years competition, but it will need the whole community to come together with ideas and to implement the improvements. Looking through the report, it stuck out a mile what a great Job the Roundstone FAS lads played within the village, we seriously thank the GCC, supervisor Donal Nee, Tony Loughnan, Tom Conneely, Joe Acom McHugh, Joe O’Toole, and John Mongan. The FAS Scheme is a vital link to our village, and long may it last.
Monty Halls:
After the very successful event of Monty Halls Dive and beach festival in early September up on Gurteen beach, which was in aid of a fund raiser for a save the whale & Dolphin pontoon, of which by the way after the expenses of the fest just under €2,000 was raised, but as the target is €,5,500, therefore Monty is at it again in what he calls the “Aran Sweater” rowing by Currach from the Arran Islands to Roundstone to continue this fund raiser to support the whale and Dolphin Conservation, he was supposed to take off this morning from Innishmor at 11am and was due to arrive in Roundstone at 6pm this evening or there a bout’s, but for the second time, the row had to be cancelled because of bad weather. I must say it’s a brave thing for Monty to do, even though he will have good back up with John Britton, Padraic Joyce and Martin O’Malley and their boats, so he is going to try again on Sunday next.
Roundstone Market:
The remaining date in September for the Roundstone Market is the 26th September, the next one will be another on the 24th October, none in November, two in December i.e. the 19th and the 30th December. So there we have it, I think it’s appropriate to thank John Walsh for bringing in another asset in to Roundstone
Pony Fair and Games:
Last Saturday we had the pony fair and the Men’s games on the show grounds, for the Pony fair not a great turnout, however there was support. The games I have to say has great potential, men from Roundstone, Cashel, Recess, and Carna, all turned up for the Sheaf Tossing, Horse Shoe Pitching, Crocket and Archery, there were to be a few more games to be included, but the inclement weather called a halt, while we had the few hours it was good fun. Our thanks to all those that helped on the day, there truly is some very talented games players; lets hope this parish games will be an annual event. There will be a meeting within the next few weeks amongst the volunteers to discuss where we tripped up so to speak, to really improve this event, we are lucky to have the support of Forum and the GCC Sports development, and more importantly support from other parishes encouraging us not to give it up. Next year the community games will go ahead on the village green for the kids with sponsor ship from various government bodies. Good news for everybody, sport and games are very much sort after. Talking about the men’s group, another outing lads, this time to the National Ploughing Champions in Athy, Kildare on the Thursday of the 23rd September, a bus has been sponsored by Forum as part of the RCR men’s group, the only cost is entry to the championships, some where around €15 to €20, any body who wants to go just get in touch with the Cashel Development Office 31052, or 0879558462
Father Jarleth:
I received an email from Michael Neary, Archbishop of Tuam, on Saturday morning and I quote “I spoke with Fr Jarleth and, in view of the fact that other plans did not materialise, I have appointed him as parish priest of Roundstone with immediate effect. I trust that he will receive the wholehearted support of the people of the Parish and I am sure he will appreciate any advice and support you may give him” unquote. So there you have it a permanent priest for the parish. Father Jarleth read out his appointment at yesterday’s morning’s mass, he also informed us that His Grace Archbishop; Michael Neary will be with us at next Sundays Mass.
Taken by Surprise:
One must never underestimate the circulation Community Radio, yesterday a regular listener in Cork, presented me with an apology and a lovely bottle of wine, because apparently he had emailed the radio on the way on one particular occasion I fluffed the news and made a slight mess of it, this fluffing so to speak was some considerable time ago, himself and a fellow walker connected with radio was on one of Michael Gibbon’s walk just a few days ago, for some reason my name came up, who ever it was that is part of the radio, must have said some nice things about me, because the next day your man came to my door to apologise with a very nice bottle of wine for the said email, that effort was so nice, and took me quite by surprise. So there you are, there are after all some good and nice people around. Thank you both
