Hope everybody is making the most of the official longest day.
What with this great weather there was quite a circulation of visitors this weekend, bringing a nice income into the village and also I was talking to some of the stall holders during the village market on Sunday so far every body seems to have done quite well, in fact I have noticed we now have 22 stalls, even poultry have come on to the scene. What ever next, Brilliant St Patrick’s day parade; In preparation for next years St Patrick’s parade here in Roundstone, Katrina Keane and Marion Mc Donagh arranged for a table quiz held in the Shamrock in conjunction with Cancer Care West last Thursday as a start of the 2010 fund raising for this event for the year 2011, its very refreshing that the young people of Roundstone have taken the initiative to bring some thing else in to the village, they are the future leaders. A considerable amount of money was raised that evening, the winning team was with Nial Griffin, Albha Creane, Ronan Creane and Nadine who works in O’Dowd’s, the second Team with Sam Reynolds, Paul delappe, Cormac Lowry and Geraldine Coyne. On their behalf I am sure they would like to thank all those who participated and I am sure St Patrick also thanks them, their next event as the on going fund raising will be an auction some time in August. Note: Owing to the recession and the lack of funding, we have decided not to approach The Friends of Roundstone that have donated monies over the last few years for the Arts Week. We have decided therefore for the year 2010 to have only a weekend from the 2nd July – 4th July to keep Arts Week alive. Fr John McCarthy; It is now official, Father John’s last mass in Roundstone will be the 12th July, Friday 16th July is the first day of his retirement, and Knock will be his home for the future. The collection of the retirement fund that is on going will be given to him privately without ceremony, however a speech will be made at the last mass, therefore all details of that Sunday will be passed on to those overseas. RDC: The Roundstone Development Council had their monthly meeting in the Community Hall, the Issues that came and discussed was the toilet situation for the beaches, representatives of the committee talking with GCC to try and provide this facility for the summer, ie Porta Loo’s in preparation for the possibility of a blue flag. Dogs Bay was officially awarded the green flag for the year 2010 which is now official, so well done to the Beach committee. Water: RDC has a meeting with Liam Gavin GCC Senior Engineer this week re our new water system that possible that there could be shortage water, if this wonderful weather remains with us for the summer. I only hope this time that if the pumps are turned off in Roundstone, we will be informed as to times etc. If this should be the case of the eventual shortage of water, it would be a good idea if everybody be made aware of this possible shortage, and spare the water as much as you can as from now. Traffic Lights: The Traffic Lights will be back with us for this year in July, it was hoped not to have them, as there was going to be a traffic management plan with the GCC in place for June, but unfortunately this did not materialise, hence the return of the lights.
Birthday Wishes: I hear on the grapevine that we have two young ones in Roundstone that have or will reach this week the grand old age of 21, so a very happy birthday to Lisa Coyne and Martin Paul O’Donnell, the world is your oyster. IDA statue: Paddy the Yank rang me to inform me that the statue down at the IDA Centre behind the work shops in the middle of the fields has had a serious face lift beautifully painted, now here’s the thing, if any body can identify the male figure statue, with back up proof the winner will receive a prize of dinner for two, or the winner quite possible will have the statue named after him, yer I quite like Saint Richard de Stacpoole, but then on the other hand I think I prefer the dinner and a good bottle of Rose. Message for you Ann this could be another item for your heritage walk to add into the potential pamphlet. The said statue when final had it second coat, photo’s will be on the website in a day or two. Talking about Paddy the Yank, it just reminds me that he has the exciting Pony show coming up on the 11th July, getting better and better every year, and not to forget the raffle for the car Draw, I am assuming the Draw will be during the Showing of the Champions of Champions in September, just check with Paddy. Roundstone News 14th June 2010 Ann Conneely Errisbeg House Wedding Reception: Simon Ashe & Ann Pryce tied the knot on Friday last here in Roundstone and had a marquee Wedding reception, in the Grounds of Errisbeg House for 180 guests. The weather was perfect and the setting magnificent and because of the wind factors no midges. On Saturday night the festivities carried on and Nolee McDonnell’s Band played in Shamrock Bar for Simon & Ann and friends. Sunday Francis Ashe has a special lunch again in the Shamrock for his close friends and the bride and groom. We wish the couple a long and good life together. Christening: Kevin & Eileen deCourcey’s had their son christened yesterday by Fr John The Baby is called Sean after his grandfather and it was lovely to see Agnes the great grandmother at the event and in such great health. Four generations in the one place. It is not too often one sees that. We are all delighted for Kevin and Eileen on their lovely little boy after two girls. Farmers Market: Which is now held weekly had a very quiet day this past Sunday; perhaps it was to do with the not too fine weather. It is a great plus for the village and up till this they have had a huge success so lets hope it was just a once off and that it will be back with the bustle and great atmosphere again next Sunday.. Helicopter: A helicopter was circulating around and around the village all afternoon on Sunday Questions were being asked? At one time it was the norm but since the downturn in the economy and the great road between Galway & Dublin it now a rare thing to see again. Anyway after some investigation I found that it was a film crew doing a take on Monte Hall who is in our midst making a documentary. Monte will be here till September.
Good luck to Young Michael Ferron who is getting married next Friday in Longford. Michael is the son of Michael John & Catherine Ferron
