Mistle Thrushes:
A rather lovely story, Allan, Keane Conneely and Eamon Mongan were monitoring a thrush’s nest over the last few weeks, to there sadness they saw a cat kill the mother bird, leaving three half feathered fledglings, Martina brought them up to me with the kids with the nest, as I had a infer red lamp we duly started to warm them up and feed them, running around for worms, and soaked small bits of bread, and showed them how to feed these tiny birds, having warned the kids they might not survive the night, and not to over feed them, however the birds did survive the night. The next day after school the kids were up here like a shot and so glad to see them still alive, they decided to take my infer red light and take them home to look after them, that was a week ago, sadly for the kids the birds died just yesterday much to their sadness, but what a great effort. It’s so good to see young people with a very genuine care for the wild life, considering the mass destruction around them of the fauna and wild life of these horrendous gorse fires.
Gorse Fires:
While we are on the subject of fires being very much in the news lately, another gorse Fire broke out close to Roundstone Thursday afternoon up by the quarry on Val Gorham’s and John kings land heading towards Yvonne Kings house, thank god once again for the prompt action of the Clifden fire brigade, golly have they had their work cut out, with fires starting up all over Connemara over the last few weeks, what is even more disturbing I don’t suppose we will ever find out how they are being started, is it just devilment, vindictive or just plain accidental, and of course there is the possibility of jumping on the band wagon in the name of vandalism in the clearing for new grass, what ever it is, it’s a cruel act, I have some photo’s of sheep being scorched, the bog road bogs are all scorched. I gather the Guards are looking into these acts of vandalism, let’s hope they will be able to find out some thing. It was pointed out to me, on face book a local persons mother who was on holiday driving along the bog road saw two guys just after lighting a fire right by the road, the following day she counted 5 ewes along the road with all their wool scorched and could see patches of skin all blistered, how they were still walking around, defeated her, just a pity this lady had no camera to take a shot of these two guys, perhaps through this message it could be investigated for some sort of identification, it’s just a thought that some years ago we were given a fire engine as back up for Clifden, with a local working crew but unfortunately the powers that be would not allow us to use the engine, it now makes me think, that perhaps we should organise a Roundstone Gorse fire crew, with these special beaters at a central point, should this ever happen god forbid again. We now have had a bit of rain, what man has destroyed perhaps nature will recuperate mans destruction.

Ann did mention last week so just as a reminder re Sunday May 9th in the form of a pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick with Mass being celebrated at the summit of the mountain at 12 noon and the day will finish with a barbeque in Murrisk. A bus has now been confirmed departure 9 am from Roundstone, but we do need to confirm number of persons who wish to do this climb and to avail of the bus. Last year 400 young people took part with about 12 from our parish. So just give me call 0868215153, by the way the climb is open to any body, naturally weather permitting. But, I do need to know who would like to go before a bus is ordered

BBC Production:
As Ann mentioned last Monday re the BBC production of the series “Monty Halls escape”, which will be the third Episode filming up and down the west coast of Connemara, but based in Roundstone for the next six months.
A public meeting with Monty who incidentally being a marine biologist and a public speaker with tales of diving around the world, this will be a chance for everybody to meet Monty and he to explain the project and possibly have a brain storming evening, to guide him in the right direction therefore a public meeting will take place in the Roundstone Community Hall Tuesday May 4th at 7.30 pm. By the way on Wednesday 9pm BBC 2 you can see what Monty gets up to with his series, this is part 2 being shown, its worth looking at to give you an idea of what he is after.

Belarus:
Last Monday after Mass we had a visit from a sister from the Convent of St Elizabeth in Belarus, which is in the Ukraine, the sister gave a presentation on the history and works of her Community in Minsk which is aimed at helping the patients of the Psychiatric hospital, also to help Children without parental support, also the sufferers from Drug and alcohol dependence, the sister had a small stall in the hall way of the church selling various hand made products from her Convent, such as Icons, Crucifixes, and other church items etc but also hand made toys for the Kids. She has travelled all over Ireland to sell these rather lovely items and the proceeds will help the Convents construction and of course it’s charitable works.
Fish Shop:
As from early June I am delighted to say that Denis Kane will be opening a fish Shop in the old post office, no better man with his knowledge of fish, it certainly will enhance Roundstone as a fishing village, so just to wish him the best of luck for his future project.
Roundstone Bingo Club:
Last Friday was the third time to hold bingo in the Community Hall, a great crowd with two of our regular visitors from Douglas in the Isle of Man, John and Fiona Ferguson won the full House, but get this, they gave the money back into the kitty, this gesture plus the crowd could it be a good omen for the future? So John and Fiona quack! quack! So the number 22, two little ducks was a lucky number for all of us.
Our grateful thanks to you both. This Friday’s Bingo will be hosted by Oliver Coyne at 8.30 pm as I am off to Lourdes for a few days
