Marina
On Wednesday last, Minister Conor Lenihan and Frank Fahy met the Marina Committee in Roundstone. The Committee were delighted that he took time out to have a look at the proposed site and to hear what has been done to date. Eamon O’Cuiv is working closely with Minister Lenihan
Roundstone National School
The national school re-opened today after the summer holidays. Michael McDonagh takes over as principal teacher replacing Nicola Spokes. Michael is a native of Erislannon, Ballyconneely and had been teaching in Clifden. Eamon King held the post of Principal in Roundstone back in the late 70’s so it is nice to see a male teacher again to get the position. The parents are delighted with the arrival of Michael and look forward to his slant on teaching and the introduction of sports into the curriculum.Good luck to all the children returning school
Fund Raising
Last week Teresa Conneely/Walsh and her family held a fund raiser for the Vincent Foundation in Dublin. €550 was raised on the day and this will go towards research into Crones and colitis disease. Well done Teresa and also to all at the Shamrock Bar for their hospitality
Irish Nights
In Connemara the Clifden Pony Show reflects the end of the summer tourist season. In Roundstone the last of the Irish nights is our indication that the summer is coming to an end and the children prepare for going back to school. The Irish nights which Christine Lowry organised and ran for the last 8 weeks to packed houses, really finished with a bang last Wednesday night. What a night we had and such talent from all over Connemara with the main core of musicians being Marcus Hernon and his family. The boys Prinsious and Brendan also danced each night, and then there was Johnny Mairtin Larry McDonnagh, Mike Fahy and a guest accordion player each week, plus a host of local talent. We shall certainly miss the social and cultural night that it represented. Well done to Christine and we must not forget Margaret who manned the door each night and Geraldine who assisted and the local businesses who supplied some lovely prizes.
Death
We were all saddened to hear of the death of Edward Kennedy last week. He was no stranger to this part of the world and spent happy holidays at Ballinahinch Castle. His sister Jean Kennedy Smith also a regular attended Fr. McCarthy’s Mass here in Roundstone on many occasions. Chris Dodd who has a home here in Roundstone was a close friend and spoke at his removal on the Friday night.
Order of Malta
Richard represented Roundstone at a gathering of all Order of Malta’s in Knock over the week-end as a pilgrimage for people from all over Connemara
