Roundstone Arts weekend:
Well that the Arts weekend over for this year
As was explained over the last few weeks on the Connemara community radio, the situation re the arts week in its normal one week of events was not going to happen owing to the shortage of money, hence just a week end just to keep it alive.
The opening at Errisbeg House of Brenda Malley’s new seascapes painting, Brenda has been with me for the last two weeks as the solo resident was great success, not talking about sales, but the potential advertising of Roundstone with guest speaker Monty Hall and the BBC 2 television crew, Monty showed some clips of his work around the west from the last few weeks, in conjunction with Brenda’s paintings.

That was the Friday night, then on the Saturday at the Ballinahinch Castle we had Claire Wallace as a soprano singer accompanied with Dr Deborah Armstrong on the piano, this is one scenario we have never had in our humble Arts week, it was so cool, then we had a bat watch at my place with Carol Reynolds. Sunday music in the street with some like it hot, Disco for the kids on the playground, and then with Marcus Hernon with his two boys, Brendon & Pontius, it was just like an Irish night only, out doors by the flag poles which drew a great crowd, with our local ladies dancing and our Young Maeve O’Neil who is just eight years old danced wonderfully much to the delight of the crowd, there was another young seanos dancer, unfortunately I did not get her name, however some photos of the various events will be up on the Roundstone website in a day or two.

The conclusion for the weekend, although every thing went smoothly it has to be said that for July there were not so many people around, the only consolation however at least Ann and I have kept the Arts week alive, so hopefully we will have a full week for the year 2011

Next Weekend:
We have a very busy weekend coming up, starting with next Friday the 9th July with the Selection of a Roundstone Pony Show in The Shamrock, so if anybody wants to sponsor a young lady just Give Paddy the yank a call for all the details. The Saturday is the start of the Regatta, with the sailing race’s 2pm sharp, naturally weather permitting and the rowing race’s is on the 17th & 18th July. Then of course we have the Roundstone Pony Show, so pry for good weather and hopefully there will be a few more people around, mind you I did hear that at least the entries are well up, and promises to be a great show as will the regatta.

Father McCarthy:
Unfortunately its Father John’s last mass on Sunday, as he retires to Knock on the 16th July, after the mass, a few words will be said to bid him farewell, then the Ladies of Roundstone have arranged a little party in the lower Community Hall, after Mass, to give people a chance to shake him by the hand to wish him well and have a presentation made to him.

Birthday wishes:
Edel Burke, daughter of Catherine and John Burke, also to Pat Conneely, and to Sam Reynolds don’t worry guys age will not be mentioned, suffice to say Happy birthday to three of you.

Auction for Cancer Care West:
As was mentioned last week I was talking to Katrina Keane re the fund raising for next years St Patrick’s Day parade which is to be held in Roundstone next year in conjunction with Cancer Care West, the auction will be held on the 7th August with very useful items for auction, again this will be held in the Shamrock, anyway as the weeks go on we will get a list of Items so that everybody has a chance to avail of the auction.

Father McCarthy:
What a busy week for Roundstone as was for Fr McCarthy who is drawing close to his retirement date, on Wednesday he officiated at an open air graduation Mass for six young students from Roundstone’s St. Elda’s school who will be going on to Clifden Community School come this September. The students are Clara Mongan, Chloe Walsh, Clara King, Tony Freeman, Dillon Keaney, and Kieran Conneely.

Sadly there are no new comers for this year I think this is the first time ever. Munreor Michael McDonagh spoke highly of the outgoing students and reflected on his first year as principal. He also spoke of the refurbishing of the national school which will start during the summer holiday period.   A presentation was made to Fr. McCarthy and to the two outgoing outstanding parents who did so much for the school in the past and hopefully will stay involved for the next year these were Ger Coyne & Theresa Conneely. Refreshments were prepared and served by the mothers of the children and I must add that all students were a credit to their parents and teachers that day.

Graveyard. At this time more and more people visit our cemetery in Gurteen. I was amazed at the neglected appearance of the graveyard on my visit today.  Most years the FAS lads took care of strimming the area but with three of the workers building the sea wall in the village (In my mind a job the Co. Council should be doing themselves) and the other two FAS workers on a two and a half days each week, there is not enough time for them to take care of the grave yard.  In all fairness it is up to each individual person to take care of their own graves and surrounding area.  Perhaps also, people should take the old flowers and wreaths away and not stack them at the side walls as this is so unsightly. Next time you are visiting a graveside do bring a black sack along with you and dispose of all broken items from your grave in a proper manner.  It is the least we can do for our departed love ones.

Birthdays: Lots of Birthday wishes and parties over the week-end Lisa Coyne turned 21 and had her party at the Shamrock.  Ann Marie King had her 40 at Eldons with a dinner for her family and close friends. Kieran DeLappe had a Birthday as did Loren Conneely who was 14th and little Christopher Conneely is three. Today Jack O Neill is all of the big 50 and sister Meadhbh celebrates her 8th birthday on Friday. Congrats to everyone.

Tidy Towns: Roundstone Village is looking good and as an added bonus known as Maggie’s corner is cleared out we will have to plant the boat.  The Galway side entrance to the village has been streamlined which makes a huge difference. Everyone is making a great effort this year and I have never seen so many flowers in the village before.

Rosie McGurrin: Once again Rosie’s Innishlacken project week was a huge success with many famous painters and friends of Rosie’s attending this now annual event.  The group stayed over on the island of Innishlaken and were so lucky to have such good weather.
This project is now in its 10th year.  Where has the years gone? I remember
