At last we now have a nice clean pot hole free road from the church onwards, finished just in the nick of time before the Bank Holiday, therefore thank you Galway County Council. What is also very noticeable everybody has made a serious effort this year to keep their front doors in a good tidy order along the road side; our visitors can not help but be impressed.

Bank Holiday:
We had a very busy weekend, helped of course by the good weather with lots going on, such as the Market, children’s fun run, music etc. The Roundstone fun run was a great success with great support from the schools, adults and visitors alike, with bouncing castle, face painting and the disco with DJ mike, on the playground and tennis courts, a great venue, helping to create the atmosphere of the day was the Market on the courts certainly helped bringing all sorts of people to support the fun Run, my thanks to the forum staff, Tina, Kathleen, Sandra, Peter and Bernard, our own guys, Oliver Coyne, the man who always gets us out of trouble, Johnny Sheehan for his banners and various other bits of equipment, Kieran delapp for his skill in erecting the complicated face painting tent, Garda John Conneely and the traffic, our young water boys and not to forget Geraldine Coyne in the lead car, and of course our wonderful local face painters, in fact thanks to everybody for a smooth running event. The photos are up on the website as we speak.

Tidy Towns:
The village is looking really good; I think for the first time it really shows, with all the hanging baskets and wooden barrels filled with flowers which were put up during the week, it has to be said so many people have commented yesterday how  very picturesque and tidy the village is looking.

One should express our appreciation and thanks for all the FAS lads and their supervisor Donal Nee working in conjunction with the Galway County Council. One, the scheme is giving employment to some of our own local people from the village, and with the work that has been done to date, it has given a sense of pride in this unique village and surroundings, particularly with litter control and in the creation of the walled garden beds in prominent parts of the village and proper recycling.  It enhances the village from the visitor’s and local’s point of view.  Thanks to Tony Loughnan and Joe Achim McHugh who is part of FAS are doing a mighty job in clearing the bins and keeping the streets clean 2 1/2 days a week , some times working within their own time, this is a great help since we have lost John Connelly, it should be encouraged that perhaps members of the community if they spot a full bin, they might help  out and replace the full bag with a clean one

Keane’s Fish Shop:
Last Friday, Pauline and Denis Keane opened their new fish shop which was at one time the old post office, and is situated beside the Match maker. The first customer purchasing some fish was Carmel Keane, it is so great to have this business in the village, lets face it we are a fishing village, I don’t know how many people through the website have wondered why it was fish could not be purchase on site so to speak, having to give all sorts of explanations, now I can say “Oh but we do have a fish shop”. Congratulations to the Keane family on this enterprise, and we all wish you well for the future. There are photos on the website of the opening.

Leaving Cert:

Its the time of the year again, for the leaving Cert students, its just to wish luck to Cathal Mullen, Shorna O’Toole and Craig Welsh on Wednesday, in fact good luck to everybody who is taking their leaving cert.

Simon Ashe and Anne Price:

Finally, good luck and best wishes to Simon Ashe and Anne Price on their forth coming marriage on Friday, we hope you will have a great day and long married life together. Oh which reminds, there will be a controlled Fire work display some time on the Friday evening just behind my house, some animals particularly dogs have a genuine fear of the noise, so be advised to shut your animals up for a short time

Caillin Conneely of Letterdyphe:
The Connemara pony show circuit is in full swing, delighted to say our own Caillin Conneely from Roundstone won the 2year old filly class in Westport yesterday with the same filly as a yearling that won the yearling class at the Roundstone Champion of Champions last year, and then at the Connemara pony show in Wicklow today, he has just won with his three year old mere the junior championship and the reserve championship in the evening. Wicklow is a very competitive show of high standards, it’s a show  that gets very good television coverage, Caillin, I am told gave a very good Television interview, and naturally gave Roundstone a very good and genuine plug, particularly making reference to the Roundstone Pony show, which should draw a good crowd for the forth coming shows here in Roundstone. Caillin well deserves these rewards, he has worked hard enough through the years, and it’s all beginning to come together, a good ambassador for us, well done.

For the last few weeks we have been arranging for a retirement fund for our Parish Priest, who will retire to knock, hence the letter below was sent out, and I thought people across the water through the power of the website  would like to be informed from the Roundstone Parish.

Cashel and Recess are also in the process of a retirement fund.

Letter

You may, or may be not aware that our Roundstone parish priest, Father John McCarthy is due to retire at the end of June.

I am writing to ask if you would like to find your way to make a cash or cheque donation towards the McCarthy retirement fund as a grateful acknowledgement of our appreciation for his work within the parish over the last few years.

Cheques or cash donations can be deposited, in the local Roundstone post office or Wood’s Shop before the 1st July 2010 or at the above address from people across the water, directly to me.

One thing for sure Father John will be very sorely missed; Father John was unique as a Parish Priest.

We will have a certain Father Charles Hegarty to re place Father John on a temporary basis, for how long I am not sure.

We look forward to hearing from you in the near future, and we will give you an update of our efforts for the pension Fund as it unfolds.

Yours Sincerely,

Richard de Stacpoole
